Texas Township Went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 after a brief struggle with leukemia. Bob was born on June 7, 1945 in Elkhart, IN, to Howard and Cleone Unser, who preceded him in death. He was united in marriage with Faith N. Philpot on August 26, 1967. They enjoyed almost 35 wonderful years of life together before she passed away in 2002. Bob is survived by his four children, Greg and Jill Unser Jacob, Erica, Ashlynn of Stockbridge, WI, Heather and Shane Groner Kaitlyn, Laura of Plainwell, MI, Gwendolyn "Wendy" and Craig Jackson Kent, Peter, George, Evelyn, Miriam of Otsego, MI, and Brian and LeeAnne Unser Abigail of Plainwell, MI. Bob was blessed to marry Debra Lynn Yonkers on January 5, 2008, and they enjoyed three loving years together. He is also survived by Debra's children Rodger and Christina Yonkers Rachel, Allison, Joshua of Kalamazoo, MI and Holly and Edsel Mathews Christopher, Jonathan of Portage, MI. Bob will also be missed by his sister Carolyn Erv Hitzeman of Ellison Bay, WI, his sister-in-law Bonnie Dave Kastelein of St. Francis, MN, his brother-in-law Ronald Leslie Philpot of Titusville, FL, and 11 nieces and nephews. Bob accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior as a child, and his love for the Lord was evident in his life. He was an active member of Calvary Bible Church and sang in the choir with Debra. Bob enjoyed tandem bicycling, hiking, woodworking, landscaping, collecting Corvettes, and listening to classical music. Most of all Bob valued spending time with his family. He was thankful for each day that God gave him following his first battle with cancer 12 years ago. Bob graduated from Wheaton College in 1967 and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University in 1971. He began his career as an eye doctor at Kalamazoo Optometry in 1971, specializing in low vision. Bob spent many years working at the Low Vision Clinic at Western Michigan University, and beginning in 1988, Bob also taught a graduate level class at WMU in the blind rehabilitation department. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists. Bob had an excellent work ethic and was dedicated to his profession; he thoroughly enjoyed helping people improve their vision. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 13, at Calvary Bible Church, 855 S. Drake Road with Dr. John Barnett officiating. Interment will follow at Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St., on Sunday, December 12, from 2-6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to the missions fund at Calvary Bible Church or the West Michigan Cancer Center.
