Portage, MI Passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Robert was born August 22, 1919 in Jackson, MI, a son of Alexander and Jessie Barclay and had lived in the Portage area for many years. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1937. He joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Sioux Falls, SD, where he met and married Shirley Huhn, who survives. He then served his country, stationed in England, for over 4 years. After the service, Robert and Shirley returned to the Kalamazoo area, where he worked in the paper manufacturing industry for over 43 years as a lithographer, starting with the Sutherland Paper Company and finishing with the James River Company. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed tennis, golf, bowling and playing bridge. In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his children, Stephen Beverly Barclay of Suwanee, GA, David Barclay of Portage, Wendy Sam Thigpen of Charlotte, NC and Gail Phillip Friedrick of Alma, MI; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, a brother James and a sister, Phyllis. A private family service and burial has taken place.
