TANNER, Richard W. ?Dick?
of Kalamazoo Dick Tanner, son of E.C. and Jennie Working Tanner passed away at Rose Arbor on May 11, 2011. Born July 23, 1920 in Kalamazoo, he was raised in Oshtemo and graduated from State High School in 1938 where he was a member of the baseball and football teams. He attended Western Michigan University. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. Stationed in Frederick, Oklahoma, Sergeant Tanner was a radio mechanic. In 1944, Dick married Mary Louise Harris who preceded him in death in 1991. Dick worked for First Federal Savings and Loan Assoc. for 40 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Portage United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, and active in Senior Olympics, winning many awards. He enjoyed travel, sailing, tennis, racquet ball, paddleball, and listening to Maddock! Above all, he loved his family and many friends. In 1999 Dick married Margaret Mary Oudsema and they enjoyed 12 wonderful years together. Dick was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Louise and his three brothers Wayne, Forrest and Noble. He is survived by his wife Margaret, his children Richard Tanner Janet, Kathryn Fuss Jerry, John Tanner Karen, Grandchildren Steven Corstange Tracy, Kristine Taylor Robert and three Great Grandchildren Tanner and Morgan Corstange and Blake Taylor. Also surviving are his step-children Robert N. Oudsema Carol, Mary Lynn Stevens Clyde, William Oudsema Kathy, Jack Oudsema, Thomas Oudsema, Carol Miller Scott, and David Oudsema, with fifteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren plus many wonderful nieces and nephews. Cremation and a private burial has taken place. Memorial services will be held at the Portage First United Methodist Church, at 8740 S.Westnedge at 11 am on Tuesday May 17th? Family will meet friends on Monday May 16th from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portage First United Methodist Church, Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, or to a charity of your choice.
