HUTTER, RICHARD X.
Of Kalamazoo, Michigan Passed away Friday evening, July 17, 2009 at Upjohn Nursing Home. Richard Dick was born January 1, 1930, in Park Hills, Kentucky, the son of Xavier and Eleanor Geisken Hutter. On November 5, 1955, he began a marriage of over 53 years with the former Shirley Burgess of Sanford, Maine. The same year they moved to Kalamazoo and have been Kalamazoo residents ever since. For 34 years, prior to his retirement in 1989, Dick was employed with The Upjohn Company, working in marketing and new product planning as Manager of Business Research. He was a member of St. Augustine's Church in Kalamazoo where he was an usher for many years. Dick began what would become a lifelong love of tennis when he took a job as a youth at Devou Park in Covington, KY where he was allowed to play on the Park's clay courts. In addition to playing regularly with friends, Dick was a longtime official and volunteer at the National Junior Tennis Championships held annually in Kalamazoo and at other national and local collegiate and professional tennis events. Dick spent many years volunteering with the Kalamazoo Chapter of Meals on Wheels, serving meals to senior citizens. He is a 1952 graduate of Miami University of Ohio and received his Masters of Business Administration from Indiana University in 1955. During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Air Force. Surviving in addition to his wife Shirley, are two sons, Brian Kay Hutter of New Albany, OH and Dana Hutter of Arlington, VA; two grandsons, Mitchell Hutter and Stephen Levy; and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; by a sister, Lorraine Prigge of Indianapolis, Indiana; and by an infant son, David Charles Hutter. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Friday, August 21 at St. Augustine Cathedral 542 W. Michigan Ave with Father James Richardson presiding. A private family interment will be held in Mt.
