DEKEMA, Richard
Of Kalamazoo Richard was born May 23, 1916, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Frank and Anna VanderWoude Dekema and passed away March 19, 2010, in Frankenmuth, Michigan. He was a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident, who served in the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II. Richard was employed with American Tool for 16 years and the City of Kalamazoo for 11 years, retiring in 1981. Richard was a member of Twin Lakes Reformed Church and served as an elder, deacon, and Sunday school teacher. Richard also served on his local school board and Citizens Committee. He married the former Dorothy Lyon, who survives, on January 26, 1940. Also surviving are three children, Carole Michael Kiefer of Saginaw, Robert Holly Dekema of Calumet, MI and Brian Dekema of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren, Amy Metz, Joseph Kiefer, Aaron Dekema and Russell Dekema. Richard was preceded in death by four siblings, Dorothy Jager, Alice Folkersma, John and Bernard Dekema and daughter-in-laws Sandy Dekema and Nancy Dekema. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., where a funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Donald DeYoung officiating. Interment will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery.
