VANDERBILT, Rev. Henry
Kalamazoo, MI Passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in Battle Creek. Rev. VanderBilt was born May 10, 1915 in Rock Valley, IA, a son of John and Jennie Blankespoor VanderBilt. Before entering the ministry, Henry was a builder and farmer and had served his country in the United States Army. He felt the call to ministry at a later age and was called to Hillcrest Chapel in Grand Rapids, his first charge. He then served Northwood Chapel in Kalamazoo, which became Northern Heights Christian Reformed Church and then went to Lawndale Chapel, which became Eastern Hills Christian Reformed Church. From there, Henry was called to Westfield Reformed Church in N. Dakota, where he was ordained in the Reformed Church. He retired at age 62, but stayed active when he returned to Kalamazoo. He served as an interim pastor in Guelph, Ontario, then Three Rivers, MI for 3 years and following that, he kept active as a guest pastor for many churches. On December 20, 1940, Henry married Marie E. Rietveld, who preceded him in death on November 14, 2006. He was also preceded by his parents, a daughter, Jill Ann VanderBilt in 1976; 4 brothers, Arthur, Bernard, Edward and Cornelius VanderBilt; and two sisters, Henrietta Van Loo and Jeanette VanderBilt. Henry is survived by his children, John Linda VanderBilt of Kalamazoo, Neal Elaine VanderBilt of Battle Creek, Jean Dick Mac Pherson of Kalamazoo, Sharon Henry Vlietstra of Kalamazoo, Elaine Robert Grace, NY, Dodie Howard Nash of Kalamazoo, Peggy Rafael Rodriguez of CA, Joyce Randy Anderson of Mattawan and Edward Denise VanderBilt of Grand Rapids, MI; 23 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; three brothers, Bert VanderBilt of ID, John Effie VanderBilt of Ontario, CA and Maas Eloise VanderBilt of AZ; nieces and nephews. The family will greet friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A private family interment will take place at Ft.
