COHAGEN, Rev. Dr. Charles F.
"Pastor Charlie"
of Portage Went to be with the Lord, Wednesday morning, July 6, 2011. Charlie was born November 21, 1921 in Westerville, OH, the son of Clarence and Delilah Miller Cohagen. He was a veteran serving 6 years in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. After serving his country he received his B.A. from the University of Miami; M. ED from Florida Atlantic University; MSW from Western Michigan University; and his D. ED from Western Colorado University. On January 23, 1944 he was united in marriage to his loving wife, the former Joanne Kern, who survives. Charlie was ordained into Christian Ministry in 1953 and served in churches in Southwest Michigan, Detroit, St. Charles, IL, and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He also served as Chaplain for the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety; as a licensed marriage counselor for the Kalamazoo Consultation Center; and a social worker at the Lakeside Children's Home. Charlie had a passion for serving God by serving people. His desire was that God would use him as "a calming force in the face of troubles," always pointing people to Jesus Christ. Isaiah 40:31 "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." Surviving besides his wife, are his children, Michael Jamie Cohagen, Kathleen Robert Heinkel, Christine Timothy Sipka; 7 grandchildren, David Shelly Heinkel, Kristen Heinkel, Lyndsay Heath Krueger, Phillip, Stephen, Mark Sipka, Kathe Cohagen; 4 great-grandchildren, Luke, Julia, Joshua, Rett; and many other beloved family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, John Cohagen. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 o'clock Saturday, July 9, at Trinity Reformed Church, 326 W. Cork with Charlie's 2 grandsons, Phil and Heath officiating. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at church. Immediately following the service friends are invited to stay for a time of fellowship. Private interment will be at a later date.
