PINKHAM, RAYMOND A., MD "Ray"
of Kalamazoo Passed away Monday, November 21, 2011 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Dr. Pinkham was born May 2, 1920 in Kalamazoo, the son of the late Dr.Ray and Edith Hallock Pinkham. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Physics. He then worked at the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC during WW II. From there he went on to the University of Michigan completing medical school and residency in Ophthalmology. He set up his private practice as an ophthalmologist in Kalamazoo and practiced for 35 years, retiring in 1988. He truly loved working as a physician. In 1947 Ray was married to Elizabeth Betty Burchard and they shared 58 years together, until her death in 2005. They enjoyed travel with family, times spent at their cottage in Canadian Lakes and winter months in Bonita Beach, Florida. Ray loved playing tennis into his 80's and he enjoyed golf and boating. In 2006, he married Patricia Ehrlich, who survives. Ray is also survived by his children, DonGlenda Pinkham of Viroqua, WI, JanThom Carveth of Portage and Dave Pinkham of Portage; seven grandchildren; Nathan Kylie, Joel, Aaron and Ben Pinkham; Sarah Jason Stiger, Lori Dan Konopasek and Jon Carveth; three great grandchildren, Tyler, Josiah and Allison Stiger; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his two sisters, Bee Vary and Joyce Rosinski. A memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the First Congregational Church, 129 South Park St. in Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ray's name to the SLD Center Specialized Language Development Center.
