WEADON, Dr. Preston S.
Of Kalamazoo, Michigan Died on May 20, 2009 in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born in 1916 in New York, NY, the son of E.R. and Emily Stenz Weadon. He grew up in Garden City NY and was a graduate of Cornell University where he received AB and MD degrees and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi and Alpha Omega Alpha. In World War II he served in the U. S. Army medical corps in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. He trained in neurological surgery in Boston, Rochester NY, and Ann Arbor MI. He and Betty Marie Purinton of Bristol VT were married in 1948. Dr. Weadon moved to Kalamazoo in 1951 and practiced there until 1978. He introduced several new procedures during his practice including cerebral arteriography, surgery for cerebral aneurysms, carotid endarterectomy, and shunts for hydrocephalus. He was an active staff member of many hospitals in southwest Michigan. After retirement he moved to Shelburne VT and then to Hendersonville NC before returning to Kalamazoo in 1993. He was a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the state medical societies of Michigan and Vermont, the Kalamazoo Academy of Medicine, and the Sons of the American Revolution. Dr. Weadon was preceded in death by his wife Betty, brother Donald and a nephew Donald Jr. Surviving are his son Mark, daughters Christine Michael Taplin and Laura Raymond Bennett, grandchildren Jonathan and Molly Weadon; Tyler, Charles, and Hannah Bennett, and niece Priscilla Weadon. He was a lifelong devotee of classical music having been greatly influenced by singing in the Episcopal cathedral choir in Garden City NY and by his mother who was an accomplished pianist. Cremation has taken place and the ashes will be interred in the National Cemetery at Ft. Custer, MI. A memorial service is scheduled at 1 P.M. on Saturday May 30 at the First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo.
