Portage, Michigan Died Saturday evening December 20, 2008 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence exactly four months after the passing of her beloved husband, Robert, who shared 66 years of marriage with Phyllis. She was born August 30, 1924 in Kalamazoo, Michigan a daughter of Edwin and L'Nita George Johnson. At the age of 14 she met a handsome young man named Bob, whom she later married on December 7, 1942 on Pearl Harbor Day. She and Bob spent almost 70 years loving each other, working hard to raise a family and devoting time to their three children. Because of her affinity for the beauty of the outdoors, Phyllis spent many hours working in her gorgeous garden, getting dirt under her fingernails and tilling the black earth. She also worked at Standard Federal Bank for almost 20 years, making many wonderful friends along the way, and was an active member of Lutheran Church of the Savior. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert W. Holzwarth, Sr. on August 19, 2008. She is survived by 3 children, Karen Bob Kupovits of Allen Park, MI, Robert Sandy Holzwarth of Kalamazoo, and David Linda Holzwarth of Portage; a brother, Donald Dee Johnson of Lady Lakes, FL; 6 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A memorial service celebrating Phyllis' life will be held Monday evening December 29th at 7:00PM at Portage United Church of Christ, 2731 W. Milham Ave. Private burial will take place in Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Rose Arbor Hospice Residence.
