Paul Alvin Robbert
Kalamazoo, MI On Monday, September 22, 2008 Paul Robbert died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family having fought a brave battle against cancer. He was born on July 2, 1928 in Holland Michigan to Jennie and Edward Robbert. Paul demonstrated a prodigious talent for art at an early age, and it became his life long passion. He went on to study formally at Michigan State University, graduating with a MA in Fine Arts specializing in painting and printmaking. He also performed as a jazz musician to support his academic pursuits. Paul later served on the faculty of Western Michigan University for more than forty years.
Following his retirement he remained active in the arts, continuing to produce his own work and was also known as a dedicated mentor and advisor to other artists. As an artist, he was nationally and internationally recognized. His affinity for materials and color eventually led to his exploration of paper as an art form, which he pursued for the past 30 years. As a faculty member at Western Michigan University he established the papermaking curriculum. Paul inspired many young artists with his experimental approach and spirit. He was a founding member of the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center. He is survived by his loving wife Rosamond, his three sons Christopher, Alexie, and Kerry, his two step children Janet and William, daughters-in-law Petra, Celeste and Jessica, and his four grandchildren Calvin, Oliver, Laurel and Simon. His brothers Kenneth and Richard survive him. He was preceded in death by brothers Louis, John and his sister Eunice. Paul was well loved by all who knew him and will be sorely missed. A celebration of Paul's life for family, colleagues, and friends will be held on Sunday October 5 at the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center, Park Trades Center, 326 West Kalamazoo Avenue, Suite 103A, from 3.00 PM to 6.00 PM. An exhibit of Paul's work will be on display at the same location, opening during the Art Hop on Friday October 3, and continuing through October 31. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Paul may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. Arrangements entrusted to Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St.
