MIDDLETON, Dr. Owen B.
of Kalamazoo Brother, Soldier, Husband, Teacher, Father, Traveler, Sailor, Grandfather Passed away Thursday afternoon, August 13, 2009. Owen was born March 22, 1923 in Detroit, MI the son of William and Lydia Smith Middleton. After high school graduation in 1941 he worked for a year before a two-year tour of Europe courtesy of the U.S. Army. Returning to Michigan he earned a B.A. degree from Michigan State University, 1948, an M.A. from the University of Michigan, 1950 and a Doctorate of Education from MSU in 1962. After teaching in Battle Creek and Grosse Pointe Public Schools, Owen and his family moved to Kalamazoo in 1964 where he began teaching at Western Michigan University. He retired from WMU in 1985 as Professor of Education & Professional Development. Owen was a member of the First United Methodist Church; the Kalamazoo Nature Center; and served on the Board of Directors for the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He had a life long love of sailing peaking as a member of the Flying Scot fleet at Gull Lake in the 70's and 80's. Owen enjoyed genealogy research, especially of his Scottish roots. Many travels were taken with Marilyn around the world through Elderhostels. He enjoyed astronomy.
On June 29, 1946 he was married to the former Marilyn Dreher who survives. Also surviving are his son, David Suzann Middleton; 2 grandchildren, Ian and Aren Middleton all of Kalamazoo; and 3 nieces, their husbands, children and sister-in-law Frances. A brother, W. Mitchell Middleton, preceded him in death. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 2pm Friday August 28, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, 212 S. Park St., with Rev. Dr. Douglas Vernon officiating. A reception will follow. Private interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Assoc. alz.org, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, kiarts.org or First United Methodist Church, umc-kzo.org.
