Otto L. Schuhardt, age 97 of Kalamazoo, died on February 8, 2025. He was born on January 26, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Otto G. and Marguerite L. (Houck) Schuhardt. After high school, Otto attended college before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. For 44 years, he owned and operated his own auto repair company, Schuhardt’s Auto Service. He was a charter member of Faith Reformed Church, where he served in many capacities including teaching Sunday School. On November 6, 1948, Otto married Arlene B. Townsend. They shared 44 years and raised their five children together until her death. On November 28, 1992, Otto married Beverly J. Nash, who preceded him in death. He enjoyed visiting with many friends he met over the years. He frequented Julianna’s Restaurant and Uncle Ernie’s.
His family includes his children: David (Mary) Schuhardt, Pamela (Ralph) Stafford, Joanne (Terence) Dorgan, James (Jennifer) Schuhardt, and Sheri (Jeffrey) Nord; his 14 grandchildren; his 15 great-grandchildren; Beverly’s family, several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Arlene and his wife Beverly, his grandson James Schuhardt, and his sisters: Ida Faas, Martha Weirick, and June Vitzhum.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The Bridge, 7200 Angling Rd, Portage, MI 49024, with an hour to greet the family from 10:00-11:00 AM. Donations in memory of Otto may be made to Greenwood Reformed Church.
