Norm passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the age of 85. He was born on August 30, 1932 in Colon, MI a son of Russell and Viola (Snook) Wagner. Norm enlisted in the US Navy in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1955. After serving his country, Norm attended and graduated from Michigan State University. He then began a long career as an insurance agent, retiring after 35 years of service. Norm was an avid sportsman and was instrumental in starting the Rocket Football program in 1969. He was a life member of the Colon Masonic Lodge and served as a board member of the Portage Department of Parks and Recreation. Norm enjoyed keeping busy as a seasonal worker with the DNR and the Portage Department of Parks and Recreation. While at MSU, Norm met and fell in love with Arlene Bewalda and on August 16, 1958 they were married. Norm was preceded in death by his mother, Viola and step-father, Carl Wedel; infant daughter; son, Patrick J. Wagner; two brothers, Donald and Richard Wagner; and two sisters, Alyce Carpenter and Mary Tanner. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; son, James M. (Gina) Wagner; daughter, Anne Wagner; daughter-in-law, Sara Wall-Wagner; three grandchildren, Cooper Wagner, Alisha Wagner and Brittany Wright; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Carter and Devin; and many nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 PM on Friday, October 13th at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Private inurnment in Ft. Custer National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
