Richland, MI Nicholas Gust Regas, age 69, passed away Thursday morning, April 23, 2015 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence. He was born on February 18, 1946 in Battle Creek, MI a son of Costandino and Eugenia Georgacakes Regas. Nick served in the US Army from 1966 to 1968. His career in law enforcement began in 1974 when he became certified by the State of Michigan and began working with the Region 3 Drug Enforcement Unit. In 1977 Nick was hired by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department, and he moved on in 1979 to work with the Battle Creek Police Department. In 1980, Nick became the Chief of Police in Galesburg and then returned to KCSD where he worked as a Marine Officer, Patrol Deputy, Firearms Instructor, and was a member of SWET. In April of 1999, Nick was promoted to Sergeant and in July of the same year he was promoted to Detective/Sergeant. On February 15, 2008 Nick retired from the department. Nick was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and the Theta Xi fraternity and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a firearms instructor for over 30 years and enjoyed skeet shooting. Nick enjoyed golf, tennis, his motorcycle, camping and travelling. His biggest joy was being "Papou" to his granddaughters. Nick was preceded in death by his father, Gust and his father-in-law, John York. On June 16, 1973 Nick married the former Laura York, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Lea Beth and Aliou Sidibe of Framingham, MA, Jacob Nicholas Regas of Richland and Kara Anne and Scott Cline of Prague, Czech Republic; two granddaughters, Sira Ilde Maria Sidibe and Isabella Rose Cline; a brother, John Regas of Battle Creek; a sister, Linda Zeithammel of Galesburg; mother-in-law Hilda York of Traverse City; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins; and many loyal friends. Visitation will be held from 2-6pm Sunday, April 26th at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street. Services will be held 10:00am Monday, April 27th, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 507 S. Westnedge Avenue with Fr. Theoharis Theoharis presiding. Burial with police and military honors will be held Tuesday, April 28th at 12:00 noon in Fort Custer National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the cemetery service should be in the cemetery's cortege area by 11:45 Tuesday morning. In lieu of flowers memorials and dedications may be directed to the Fraternal Order of Police or the Community Healing Center.
