Nathan E. Bankert, age 89 of Kalamazoo formerly of Colorado. He was born on November 22, 1934, in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, the son of Burl and Mary (Sperow) Bankert. Nathan grew up in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania and graduated from high school in 1953. Nathan enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained in Morse Code. He was stationed in Germany where he patrolled the Czech border. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Messiah College University. It was there he met Verna Engle. The two fell in love and were married on June 4, 1958.

Nathan had many careers; accounting, managing a bookstore, being a bank manager and finally retiring at 79 after serving others for 25 years as a CNA. He retired twice from CNA work with San Marino first and finishing at Gunnison Valley Senior Care Center in Gunnison, Colorado. Nathan and Verna retired to their cabin in the Rocky Mountains in Pitkin, Colorado. They adored Colorado and all the outdoor activities it had to offer such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing, hiking and skiing.

Nathan loved to tinker and build things, having talents in many areas. He had a passion for starting new projects. He was preceded in death by Verna after 66 years of marriage.

He is survived by his children: Vicky (John) Shaulis, Colleen (Frank) Moore, and Adele Bankert; his grandchildren: Christina (A.J.) Johnson, Danielle (Jason) Jones, Ashley (Jon) Huffman, Aaron (Amanda) Sorg, and Amy Shaulis; his great-grandchildren: Cole, Braxton, Liam, Beckett, Tobias, and Ainslee; his sister-in-law Jeanette Bankert and extended family and friends.
