Natalie M. Stafinski

August 11, 1925 — September 9, 2011

STAFINSKI, Natalie M.
Of Kalamazoo Natalie McKenzie Stafinski of Heritage Community, Kalamazoo, died on Friday, September 9th at Rose Arbor Hospice following a period of declining health. She was born to Robert P. and Hortense Hatch McKenzie in Marshall, MI, on August 11, 1925. Following graduation from Albion College, she taught English at Elsie MI High School, where she met Edward J. Stafinski. They were married on April 28, 1951 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marshall. For the next 60 years, theirs was a true partnership centered on family and home, wherever Edward's career as a school administrator took them in Michigan. At times in those years, Natalie was a member of garden and book clubs, worked as substitute teacher and volunteered for the United Way and Girl Scouts, played in a golf league and followed Michigan sports teams avidly. Her life's work, however, focused on her family and her home; she excelled as a homemaker, wife, and mother. It was a traditional and full life for a woman of her, or any, generation. Natalie was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Rear Admiral Robert P. McKenzie, Jr., and Blaine McKenzie, a brother-in-law, Doran Osborne, and two sisters-in-law, Annie McKenzie and Kit McKenzie. She is survived by her husband, her daughters Teresa Thomas Appel of Vermont and Patricia Scott Schrum of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren Emily Kevin Mainstone and Michael Amy Schrum of Kalamazoo, Kathryn Appel and Elizabeth Appel of Brattleboro, Vermont; and by the joy of her recent years, a great-granddaughter, Emma. She is further survived by her sister, Margaret McKenzie Osborne of Marshall, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 16th at 11:00 at St. Mary's Church in Marshall, with interment at Oakridge Cemetery. Instead of calling hours, the family will receive friends and family at the church, starting at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, Natalie and Edward have requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Residential Opportunities, Inc, 1100 S. Rose Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49001 to support children with disabilities. Arrangements by the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S, Burdick St. Please visit www.langelands.com for online obituary, directions, register book and condolences. 269 343-1508
