LEEGER, Myrtle Lucille
Kalamazoo, Michigan Passed away Friday, July 17, 2009. Myrtle was born January 20, 1920 in a log cabin with a dirt floor, in Finescreek, NC. She graduated from the Winston Salem Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC, as a Registered Nurse in 1942. On Christmas Day, 1942, she married John H. Leeger, who preceded her in death in 2001. For many years, Myrtle sailed the Great Lakes with her husband, who was an ore freighter captain for Inland Steel Company. When he retired, they traveled in their Air Stream trailer through all 50 states and all over Mexico and Canada. Her outgoing personality made friends of strangers everywhere they went. She loved playing games with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She helped found the Ambridge Methodist Church in Gary, IN, when her children were little and died a member of First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo. Myrtle is survived by her sons, John W. Leeger and William J. Leeger; eight grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 1, 2009 in the First United Methodist Church, 212 S. Park St. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 N. Kalamazoo Mall, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
