Portage, MI Died Saturday morning September 19, 2009. Mildred was born December 7, 1915 in Hart, Michigan a daughter of Harry and Myrtie Rellenger Spitler. She had been a Kalamazoo area resident most of her life and was a Portage Public School Teacher for 33 years before retiring. Her last 26 years of teaching, she taught first grade at Waylee Elementary and was a reading consultant at Amberly and Woodland Elementary Schools. Mildred was also a longtime member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. For many years, she worked with Loaves and Fishes and with Meals on Wheels. She continued her interest in reading by participating in the Reader's Theater at the Senior Center. Her greatest joy was her family and her support of her husband Olin to whom she had been married for 66 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Olin F. Vanderberg on April 7, 2009; 2 daughters, Sheryl Vanderberg and Marcia Ledbetter; a daughter-in-law, Nadine Vanderberg; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by a son, Jon Vanderberg of Portage; 4 grandchildren, David Ledbetter of Canton, OH, Lisa Darryl Dolby of Portage, Bob Vanderberg and Laura Andrew Fiordalis Vanderberg all of Boston, MA; a great-grandson, Drew Dolby of Portage; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11 o'clock Thursday at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 7028 Oakland Drive. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the church. Private burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes, or the charity of your choice.
