Emblem

Michael Scott Hall was born on February 13, 1949, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Affectionately known as "Mr. Hall" to his beloved students and "Sarge" to his beloved friends, he was a legendary high school History teacher at Mattawan High School, where he devoted 32 years of his life to educating and inspiring young minds.

Before becoming an iconic figure in education, Mike served his country with honor and valor in the Vietnam War. His military service was a testament to his courage and commitment, traits that he carried with him into his teaching career. Upon returning home, he continued to serve his community, sharing his wealth of knowledge and life experiences with his students.

Mr. Hall’s authentic story-telling style, brilliant mind, and deep appreciation for his students made his classroom a place of learning and often a transformative experience. Mr. Hall had an uncanny ability to make history come alive, connecting the past to the present in ways that resonated with his students. This exceptional approach earned him many honors including the distinguished Kalamazoo College Pauline Byrd Johnson Award in 1997, recognizing his outstanding contributions to education. His legacy of authenticity and dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Outside the classroom, his passions extended to the open road. As the former Vice President of the Outriders Motorcycle Club, he found freedom and joy in riding his motorcycle. This passion reflected his adventurous spirit and zest for life, traits that endeared him to all who knew him. He cherished the many loyal friendships he gained throughout his life.

Despite his many accomplishments, Mike’s greatest pride and joy were his two children, Nicholas and Amanda. His beloved children could make him laugh and feel loved like no one else. They were his true legacy, and his pride in their achievements was unmatched.

As we say goodbye to Michael "Sarge" Hall, we remember a man whose life was a testament to the power of education and the enduring strength of love. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, students, and all whose lives he touched. Rest in peace, Sarge. Your journey on this earth has ended, but your spirit will continue to guide and inspire us all.
