Michael Colbert

September 7, 1957 — November 19, 2020

Portage

Michael Oneal Colbert was born on September 7, 1957 in Thomaston, Georgia. Michael was the sixth child born to the union of Earl and Mary Liza (McCants) Colbert.

Preceding him in death were both his parents and four brothers: Albert (Al), Earvin (Lewis), Jeffery (Jeff) and Andre Colbert.

Michael was also known as "Mike", "Michael C" and affectionately called "Mack" by his father, Earl.

Although Michael was born in Georgia, when he was just a youngster, the family moved to Kalamazoo, MI. Here he attended Kalamazoo Public Schools. Upon graduation from Loy Norrix High School he enlisted in the United States Army in 1974. While serving in the military, Michael was severely injured in Germany. He was later honorably discharged for his service-related disabilities.

Following his discharge, Michael returned to Kalamazoo where he resided with his beloved caregiver brother, Fred. Other family members, Donald, Jeff, and Shirley lovingly assisted in his care.

Michael enjoyed music and had a beautiful singing voice, often humming along with videos and the radio. Michael treasured family gatherings, during these fun-filled times, Michael could be seen glancing up and smiling at their antics.

Michael enjoyed going to the movies, basketball games, swimming, amusement parks and eating a good, hearty meal! He was a gentle, caring person - always smiling, incredibly quiet and kind.

He melted the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Those at Alliance Daycare, and especially those who gave him the utmost care at Medilodge of Portage, as his health declined.

Michael quietly fell asleep in death on November 19, 2020 at Medilodge of Portage, after battling various illnesses for some time.

Michael will be missed, and this loss leaves a void in the hearts of all his loved ones. We are looking forward to the day when we will be reunited with Michael and our other dead loved ones, on a paradise earth, as the Bible promises at John 5:28,29 "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out".

Michael leaves many loved ones to cherish his memories: Four brothers; Fred, Donald, and Kerry Colbert all of Kalamazoo, MI and Kenny Colbert of Ionia, MI. Three sisters; Shirley (Anthony) Woodard of St. Louis, MO, Vatina Underwood-Colbert of Kalamazoo, MI and Stacie Colbert of Atlanta, GA. A host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who loved him dearly. Private family services will be held, with interment taking place in Riverside Cemetery.
