CUSTER, Merritt J. "Jim"
of Comstock, Michigan Jim passed away Tuesday afternoon, December 11, 2012 at his home. He was born January 9, 1927 in Windber, PA to Henry and Beulah Gettings Custer. Jim was a veteran of the United States Army serving 2 years during World War II. He was employed by KVP paper mill for 18 years and Lakeside Refining Co. for over 10 years until his retirement. Jim was also a member of Comstock VFW Post #6252. Surviving are his 2 children, Alison Harold Thompson of Scotts and Gary Judy Custer of Portage; step-son, Clair "Buck" Marks Jr. of Big Rapids; 8 grandchildren, Stephanie Ray Gower, Jeremy Mallory Custer, Michael Cassie Britton, Steven Stephanie Thompson, Lisa Thompson, Gregory Thompson, Christie Hoover and Ashlie Vogel; 4 step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Blake, Ryder, Cole, Savannah, Kari, Kati, Nik, Lili, Victoria; and brother, Clarence Custer of Windber, PA. Preceding him in death are his wife, Marian Marks-Custer; his parents; and two step-children, Duane Marks and Diane Shelley. A memorial services for Jim will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Comstock Chapel, 6121 King Highway, with Chaplain Barbara L. VanEck officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Borgess Visiting Nurse and Hospice or Comstock VFW Post #6252.
