KONING, Mr. Merle D.
Portage, MI Died Friday afternoon July 9, 2010 at his residence. Merle was born January 30, 1935 in Kalamazoo, Michigan a son of Joe and Frances DeKraker Koning. During the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Army. He had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and was employed with the Upjohn Company for 36 years, retiring in September of 1992. Merle was also a member of Fourth Reformed Church and served on the Missions Committee. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ronald Koning in 2002. On January 3, 1958, he was united in marriage to Josephine "Jo" A. Arnold Koning who survives. Also surviving, 2 children, Mark Koning of Indianapolis, IN and Bob Koning of Grand Haven, MI; 5 grandchildren, Amanda Jeremy Whitmore, and Abby, Kristen, Daniel, and Sarah Koning; a brother, Dale JoAnn Koning of Kalamazoo; a sister, Delores Karl Busching of Portage; a sister-in-law, Judy Koning of Portage; his dog, Barney; a niece; and several nephews. Services will be held 11 o'clock Tuesday at the Fourth Reformed Church, 6339 Atlantic Ave. Visitation will be 6-8pm Monday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. Interment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
