DE LOOF, Melvin J.
Of Lawton Went to be with the Lord, Wednesday morning, March 4, 2009. Mel was born May 17, 1930 in Portage the son of Marcus and Trena Bloemsma DeLoof and had been a lifelong resident in the Kalamazoo area. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mel was the owner and operator of Melvin DeLoof Builders from 1960-1995. He was also very involved in the community serving many organizations which included; Kalamazoo Township Fire Department for 25 years, 15 of those years as the Fire Commissioner; Kalamazoo Township Trustee for 20 years; the John Guest Ministries for 9 years. Melvin was a member and former president of the Home Builders Association of Kalamazoo and the Michigan Home Builders Association. Mel enjoyed volunteering at Second Impressions Thrift Store to show his devotion to the Kalamazoo Christian Schools. He also loved to fly his Cessna and spend time with his family at the lake. He was an active member of Fourth Reformed Church where he was involved with various committees and enjoyed singing in the choir. On January 25, 1952 he was united in marriage to his wife of 50 years, the former Nellie Bill who preceded him in death on July 2, 2002. Also preceding Melvin in death were his parents; 2 brothers, James and Bernard; and a sister, Catherine. On August 16, 2003 he was united in marriage to the former Linda Borgais who survives. Also surviving are his children, Michael Myra DeLoof, David Mary DeLoof, Pastor Stephen Kimberly DeLoof, Susan Richard Kleiman, Amy Patrick Baker, Andy Brandi Curtis; grandchildren, Craig Rozie DeLoof, Dana Jason Zeinstra, Nate, Kendra, and Scott DeLoof, Jeff Michele DeLoof, Kyle Kleiman, Kelly Jesse Foppema, Katelyn DeLoof and fiancé Mike Aggen, Matt and Meghan Baker, Autumn, April, Angel, and Alana Curtis; 4 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lorene Ron Lanting; extra special cousins, Pat Bob Gernaat; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A service to celebrate Melvin's life will be held 11:00 o'clock Monday at the Fourth Reformed Church, 6339 Atlantic, with Pastor James VanderRoest officiating. Private family interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Fourth Reformed Church, the Kalamazoo Christian Schools Association, or Zeeland Christian Schools.
