SHIPE, Maynard
Kalamazoo Maynard passed away at his home on December 14, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Schoolcraft, Michigan on January 6, 1933, the son of Eugene and Helen Harris Shipe. On November 13, 1959 at Knollwood Christian Reformed Church, Maynard married Grace Schreuder and together they celebrated over 51 years of marriage. Surviving him are his wife Grace; his son Edward of Toluca Lake, California; daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Dan DeHoff of Portage; granddaughter Dawn DeHoff of Otsego and grandson Daniel DeHoff of Portage; sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Ernest Cox of Vicksburg and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Wayne Shipe. After graduating from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1952 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country proudly during and after the Korean War both aboard the U.S.S. Manchester and while stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where one of his honored duties was to raise and lower the flag on the U.S.S. Arizona. Upon return from the U.S. Navy, Maynard worked for and retired from Gibson Guitars. Maynard enjoyed his family above all. He also enjoyed woodworking, photography, traveling, fishing, hunting, bowling and sitting on his deck while watching the wild turkeys and deer in his backyard. Visitations will be held from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM on Friday, December 17, 2010 at Langeland Family Funeral Homes , Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the Grace Christian Reformed Church, 1724 Whites Road, with Rev. Dr. Harry Arnold, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Maynard's name may be given to: American Diabetes Association, National Kidney Foundation, American Heart Association or Borgess Visiting Nurses Home Health and Hospice.
