Formerly of Kalamazoo Mary passed away peacefully April 1, 2010, at Meadow Woods Nursing Center in Bloomingdale, MI. Mary was born September 17, 1917, in East Chicago, IN to Peter & Agnes Stassek. A short time later the Stassek family moved to Bloomingdale and bought a farm. Mary loved her days on the farm and her school days in Berlamont. Years later, this farm gal moved to Kalamazoo and met the love of her life, Steve Buss Sabo. They were among the founding members of St. Monica Catholic Church. Mary retired after many years of working at Peter Eckrich in Kalamazoo and enjoyed bingo, cards, dancing, and trips to casinos, but especially time spent with her family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Peter & Agnes Stassek, her loving husband, Buss Sabo, a granddaughter, Jill Michelle Sabo, 2 sisters, Julia Mocklencate and Anna Ebertsch and a brother Steve Stassek. Left behind to cherish memories of Mary are her son, Mike Lynda Sabo of Norton Shores, MI and granddaughters, Amy and Rebecca Sabo of Englewood, CO; son Gary Judi Sabo of Schoolcraft, MI; and 1 brother and 3 sisters who loved having their big sister within minutes of them for the past several months, John Stassek and Helen Gilbert of Bloomingdale, MI; Irene Casey Wiacek of Bangor, MI; and Joan Floyd Rose of Bloomingdale, MI. Also dear to her were many nieces and nephews and many friends. Mary's family grew in 1993 to include three step-granddaughters and their families Michelle Edison Yiu, James and Joanna; Jill Doug Wood, Addison and Claire; and Amanda Marc Ferraro. All of Mary's family would like to express great thanks to the entire staff of Meadow Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bloomingdale, ML and Day Springs Assisted Living in Norton Shores, MI for loving care they gave to Mary during her stay with them. Services will be held Monday, April 12, 2010, at St. Monica Catholic Church, 534 W. Kilgore Avenue, Kalamazoo, with Mass at 11:00 a.m. with Msgr. Michael Hazard celebrant, followed by family visitation and luncheon in the church community center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Meadow Woods, Day Springs or Hospice At Home, in memory of Mary Sabo.
