Mary Catherine Morton

November 27, 1931 — July 19, 2024

Portage, MI

Mary Morton, a remarkable individual whose life touched the hearts of many, sadly passed away on July 19, 2024. Born on November 27, 1931 in Jackson, Kentucky, Mary’s journey was filled with love, dedication and an unwavering commitment to her family, friends, work and church.

Mary’s work path exemplified her passion for home life, family, and children. In her younger years, she worked hard on the family tobacco and sheep farm, choosing to be in the fields rather than in the house. Later, with her marriage and raising her three children, she was a classroom mom and always had a snack for neighborhood kids and hungry teenagers. She drove the school bus for Portage Public Schools for over 20 years.

Described as feisty, strong-willed, and loving; Mary possessed a spirited personality that served as an inspiration to those around her, leaving an impact on their lives. Her home was a haven for kids and teenagers.

Among Mary’s proudest accomplishments were her marriage and her children. She married James Morton Jr, on July 29th, 1950, and embarked on a journey together, filled with love, support, and countless cherished memories. Their marriage was a testament to the enduring power of commitment and God-driven life. Sadly, James passed away in 1991.

Mary held dearly the memories of loved ones who preceded her in death. She is now reunited with her husband James Morton, parents Grover Cleveland and Mary Donna (Whitenack) Allen, and siblings Malcolm, Frank, Harold, Bill, George, Charlie, and Helen.

Mary’s legacy will continue to resonate for generations to come, as she leaves behind her three daughters: Mary C (Greg) Pilbeam, Eva Faye (Morton) Silvernail, and Patricia H. (Morton) Szopinski, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother Grover Cleveland Allen and sister-in-law Barb, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 7th at 11:00 am at the Disciples of Christ Church, 2208 Winchell Ave, Kalamazoo, MI.
