Portage Passed away peacefully early Monday morning, April 11, 2011. Joan was born June 20, 1926 in Lansing, MI, the daughter of the late Harold and Jeanette Horan. She was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" LaFreniere on June 5, 1948 in Lansing, MI. Residing in Portage since 1966, she dedicated her life to her husband and the raising of five children, while also working at Town & Country Supermarkets. In her later years, she volunteered at Alcoholics Anonymous. Joan was a charter member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church of Portage. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob in 2007; a son, R. Andrew LaFreniere; a sister, Betty Ondera; and two brothers. Joan is survived by her children, Peter J. LaFreniere of Blue Hill, ME, Mary Beth Leonard Harrison of Vicksburg, Lawrence L. Susan LaFreniere of Lubbock, TX and Paul T. Ruth LaFreniere of Grand Rapids; 9 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A Scripture Service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM in the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. with Rev. Fr. Chris Ankley officiating. Interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday beginning at 9:00 AM until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Loaves & Fishes, Habitat for Humanity or Kalamazoo Gospel Mission.
