VANDERVEEN, Marvin W. Kalamazoo Marvin William VanderVeen was born on February 20, 1930 to William and Grace Hamminga VanderVeen. He passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2007. At Portage High School, he excelled in athletics with a special love for basketball. He served in the U.S. Army, where he played basketball for the U.S. Army Basketball Team. He was called back into service at the time of the Korean Conflict and was attached to the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Alaska. On May 5, 1950, he was married to the former Marilyn Slager. In 1953 they started the M. W. VanderVeen Construction Company. The company was responsible for developing and building numerous construction projects throughout the Midwest. Marv enjoyed an excellent reputation with many companies, both large and small. Marv had a strong work ethic and was known for his honesty, loyalty, and integrity. He was proud of the many projects completed by the M. W. VanderVeen Company. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother William Dale VanderVeen. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, a son Jerry Patty VanderVeen, a daughter Jill VanderVeen; two precious granddaughters, Lindsay Brian Clark and Morgan VanderVeen; two brothers, Henry Margaret VanderVeen and Richard Betty VanderVeen; an Aunt Margaret Hamminga and by many wonderful devoted friends. Marv enjoyed life and had many interests including, skiing, boating, flying, reading, travel and golf. He especially enjoyed spending time in Charlevoix. He was an avid U of M Football and Detroit Tiger fan. He loved and was proud of his family and he loved his Lord. He was a long time member at Second Reformed Church where he served both as a Deacon and an Elder and Youth Leader Building Committee member. Marv also served on an advisory committee at Hope College. He presently was on the board of the Kalamazoo Area Christian Retirement Association. Marv touched many lives and will be greatly missed. A private burial service will take place followed by a memorial service celebrating his life on Tuesday, September 25 at 2:00 pm at the Second Reformed Church, 2323 Stadium Dr. Contributions may be made to the Second Reformed Church Memorial Fund, Park Village Pines or Hope College.
