Martin Scott Underwood of Kalamazoo, Michigan, died on January 8, 2024, at the age of 64. “Scott” was born in Kalamazoo on December 23, 1959, to the late Kenneth and Gertrude Elaine (Williams) Underwood.
Scott was a man of faith who loved life. His jokes and stories could keep you laughing for hours, even in the hardest of times. He will be remembered for his big heart, his infectious smile, and for always lighting up any room he was in. He loved his Native heritage and enjoyed attending local pow wows with his family. He appreciated the little things in life, like calling friends and family on the phone, taking long car rides with his wife, maintaining his parents’ property, watching NASCAR and old Westerns, or spending time with his son, Tyler, and grandson, Benjamin, or his nephews, Christopher and Andrew.
He met the love of his life, Mindy, in 1989 while working at Wells Aluminum. They were wed on March 30, 1990, and were married for almost 34 years. Over the years, they enjoyed many road trips to Arizona, even living there for a few years. They always enjoyed going out to dinner together, often enjoying a country drive along the way, making a point to stop at local farm stands to buy sweet corn or double-yolker eggs. He often joked that he gave her the best years of his life.
Scott’s family was his pride and joy. He was the proud father of two sons, Tyler and Aaron; and one grandson, Benjamin. He also had several nieces and nephews with whom he had a special bond. When he couldn’t see them in person, they could always count on a phone call. Benjamin enjoyed their nightly video calls, especially when his grandpa used the funny-face filters. The others enjoyed listening to Scott tell stories from his younger days about going to the roller rink, getting into trouble with his cousins, or living in Texas. He could have them laughing until their faces hurt.
Scott is survived by his wife, Mindy; son, Tyler (Kelly) Kohler; grandson, Benjamin Kohler; sister, Peggy Dunigan; brother, Kenneth Underwood; sister, Stella Underwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents; son, Aaron Thompson; sister, Donna Fay Underwood; brother, Kelly Underwood; sister, Brenda Underwood; sister, Nancy Williams; and nephew, Kenneth Underwood.
