GROSSMAN, Martin H. "Marty"
of Portage, MI Passed away June 17, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born October 22, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Samuel and Mary Rosenstein Grossman. Marty graduated high school and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served from 1951-1952 and served in the Korean Conflict, receiving an honorable discharge. After his military service, Marty went to work for the New York Journal American and worked there for 9 ½ years. Marty then went to work for the New York Times where he worked for 25 years, retiring in 1992. He moved to Kalamazoo upon his retirement and made many friends. Prior to his marriage, Marty traveled throughout the world, visiting Japan and Europe. He also cared for his beloved mother for over 20 years. Marty's quick wit, sense of humor and good nature will be sorely missed. He was stricken with many health issues and fought them valiantly, finally losing the strength to fight any longer. He passed peacefully and will be fondly remembered by friends and family. Marty was united in marriage on October 18, 1985, to the former Marion Barker, who preceded him in death in 2003. Surviving Marty are his step-children, Scott Barker of Kalamazoo, Lynne Bill Lentz of Centreville, MI, Dawn Sam Zomer of Portage and Jill Todd Jemison of Myrtle Beach, SC; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; cousins, Rebecca Kaufman, Barbara Ponger and several others. Services will take place Saturday, 1:00pm, at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Ave. Memorials may be directed to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.
