GLAS, Martha L.
of Portage Martha Glas went home to be with her Lord on April 19, 2010. She died of breast cancer peacefully at home, surrounded by her family. Martha Glas was born Martha Korendyk 8/5/1935 in Appingedam, Netherlands. In 1954, she and her family immigrated to Kalamazoo Michigan. Soon after, she met and fell in love with Joe Glas, another immigrant kid, and they married on October 28, 1955. Joe and Martha had 6 kids between 1956 and 1964. She invested her all in the lives of her children and household. Martha's hard work and organizational skills enabled her to run a typical Dutch home: tidy and clean, with home cooked meals each night. Joe and Martha sacrificed to send their kids to Kalamazoo Christian schools, and attended Parchment CRC for many years. In May 1960 Joe started Joe Glas Builders, which later became Glas Associates Designers/Builders. Martha helped Joe stay on top of the business, doing the bookkeeping and helping decorate homes. Martha enjoyed managing their apartments, MarJo Apartments in Plainwell. Martha loved her dear and faithful friends in the Koffee Klatch, which has met for over 40 years, and enjoyed the company of her dear friends in Florida. Martha loved to spend time with her grandchildren, and they loved her and will miss her. Martha was also a gracious host and enjoyed having visitors. Martha also enjoyed traveling with Joe and the family. Early on the family went on two camping trips a year, and saw much of the US and parts of Canada on these trips. Later, Joe and Martha were able to travel to different parts of the US, Canada, and Europe. Martha enjoyed volunteering and spending time with her friends at Second Impressions. Martha is survived by her husband Joe of Portage, children and grandchildren: Don Miriam Glas of Kalamazoo and their children Annalise, Linnea, Camilo, Isaac, Simeon, and Shaleah; Carl Jan Glas of Portage and their children Jaelynne Casey Richardson and Rob Glas; Charlie Deb Glas of Kalamazoo and their children Rachel and Laura, Roger Glas of Parchment; Marietta Randy Vandermay of Paw Paw; and Ed Cathy Glas of Raleigh, NC and their children Jake, Will, Lydia, Peter and Nathan. She is also survived by her siblings Ben Eena Korendyk of Kalamazoo, Tena Pete Hoiting, Clara Randy Blackard of Ypsilanti, and sister-in-law, Jannie Korendyk of The Netherlands. She has many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Klaas and Hendrikje Korendyk, and a brother, Harm Jan Korendyk. Family will greet friends on Thursday from 6-8:00 o'clock, Friday from 2-4 and 6-8:00 o'clock at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street and again on Saturday at Grace Christian Reformed Church, 1724 Whites Rd., from 10-11:00 o'clock. Services will take place at the church on Saturday, 11:00 o'clock, followed by a luncheon. Burial will be private at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission or Parchment Christian Reformed Church. Please see
