of Portage, MI Marjorie H. Bowman, age 96, died on October 16, 2012 at Tendercare in Portage, MI. Marjorie was born on March 11, 1916, in Ottawa, Illinois, the daughter of Leon V. and Goldie Covell Gonigam. She attended Ottawa Township Schools and graduated from Knox College in 1937. She taught at Leland High School, Leland, Illinois, before marrying Garfield Holther in 1941. A daughter, Marjorie Ann, was born on May 13, 1944, and died on May 8, 1945. Garfield Holther died on December 14, 1945. Marjorie taught English at Aurora Bardwell Grade School and Latin at Galesburg High School prior to marrying Dr. J. A. Bowman, Jr., of Abingdon, Illinois. Marge was an active member of the Abingdon community and was a member of the Delphian Club of Abingdon and the Charter President of the CWF of the First Christian Church of Abingdon where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a Past Regent of DAR, N. S. of New England Women, and N. S. of the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America. She was also a 75-year member of Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority and was President of the Women's Auxiliary of the Knox County Medical Society. In 1933, her senior year of high school, Marjorie was chosen by her classmates to be the recipient of the Pearl "Character" Ring, a prize honoring generosity of spirit, at Ottawa Township High School. In 1969, Marjorie anonymously established a fund to award a Pearl "Character " Ring to a senior girl at Abingdon High School, Abingdon, Illinois; an honor that has been awarded every year since. Marjorie is survived by three children, Elizabeth Ann Campbell of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, John A. Kathy Bowman, Davenport, III, and Dr. Steven Jay Sherry Bowman, Kalamazoo, Michigan, along with six grandchildren: Laura Douglas, David Ward, Jane Holzer, Lynn Andrews, John A. Bowman, and Cameron Jay Bowman. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, husbands, and sisters, Elizabeth Warner of Michigan City, Indiana, Goldie McKelvey of Monmouth, Illinois, and brother, Leon G. Gonigam, Ottawa, Illinois. Many nieces and nephews survive her. Memorials to Marjorie may be made to the American Cancer Society www.m.cancer.org , P.O.
