Portage

Marilyn S. VanderVeen passed away peacefully at StoryPoint on November 28, 2020 at the age of 91. The daughter of Jacob and Mary Slager, she was born October 16, 1929. She often spoke warmly of her only sibling, Jon, and their childhood on the Slager celery farm in Comstock. After graduating from Ebenezer Christian High in 1947, she attended Calvin College. On May 5, 1950, she married Marvin W. VanderVeen. True partners, they started the M.W. VanderVeen Construction Company. Marilyn was an astute businesswoman, managing the office and bookkeeping, while raising their beloved children, Jerry and Jill. Through the years the family enjoyed times together in Charlevoix. Marilyn was a lifelong Christian and member of Second Reformed Church. A gifted musician, she played both the piano and organ for countless church services and social gatherings. Friends will remember her for her compassion, wisdom, unwavering faith and warm sense of humor. Above all, Marilyn loved her Lord and adored her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and beloved husband of 57 years. Those who survive include her son, Jerry (Patty) VanderVeen; daughter, Jill VanderVeen; precious granddaughters, Lindsay (Brian) Clark and Morgan (Ryan) Ward; great granddaughters, Natalie and Blair Clark; several cousins, nieces and nephews who were dear to her.

The family plans for a private burial at Central Portage Cemetery and asks memorial gifts to be given to: Second Reformed Church of Kalamazoo or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
