Marie H. Maile

February 19, 1942 — July 16, 2009

MAILE, Marie H.
of Galesburg Marie passed away at her home Thursday evening, July 16, 2009, surrounded by her family. She was born February 19, 1942, in McKeesport, PA, the daughter of William Beuscher and Caroline Graf Henninger. She received a BS. degree from Samford University and a M.S. degree from Florida State University. Upon her graduation in 1966, she joined the Biostatistics Department at The Upjohn Company as the company's first female biostatistician. While working at the company, she met James Maile, a coworker in the Biostatistics Department. Jim and Marie were married January 17, 1970, and over the next several years, Marie had 4 children which she raised while continuing her professional career. During one of her maternity leaves, she worked as a statistical consultant for the Veterans Administration. Marie believed in the importance of education, and passed on this trait to her children. She occasionally served as a mentor at the Kalamazoo Math and Science Center. As a girl that had grown up in the city, she became familiar with the rural life on the farm as her children became involved in 4-H, with dairy cattle, beef, goats, turkeys, horses and the numerous still projects. Marie was a 4-H leader for several projects. As a biostatistician, Marie had traveled to various national and international locations to assist in the New Drug Application process. Whether the trips were for a couple of weeks in Australia or a weekend in Paris, Marie enjoyed the travel, and when possible, would take one of the children with her. Marie was active in the local chapter of the American Statistical Association, and received the honor of Outstanding Member in 1989. Marie retired from the company in 1999 after a career of 34 years. During her retirement, she engaged in flower gardening, reading, bird watching, genealogy, being a member of the Comstock Library Book Club, doing volunteer work at the Galesburg Memorial Library and enjoying her pets. Her most enjoyable experiences were being with her family. Marie is survived by James, her husband of almost 40 years, and their 4 children: Carolyn Jack Corbett and daughter Katherine, of Palm Coast, FL; John Maile of Galesburg Judy Randy Freidhoff and sons, Brandon and Jonathan of Lake Odessa, MI; Sara Erich Shoemaker and daughter Elizabeth of West Olive, MI; She is also survived by a brother, William Jackie Henninger of Midland, MI; a sister-in-law, Nancy Charles Johnson of Park Ridge, IL; a brother-in-law, Charles Maile and Karan Hitchings of Galesburg; a stepmother Murrell Henninger of Atlanta, GA; 3 nieces and a nephew.
