Marguerite Harvey-Miner-Cimock Hoffman

HOFFMAN, Marguerite Harvey-Miner-Cimock Kalamazoo Mrs. Hoffman passed away early Saturday morning, November 18, 2006 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. The daughter of Dr. Henry and Margaret Harvey, she was born May 31, 1919, in Beatrice, NE, and grew up in Gothenburg, NE. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1942 with a degree in Home Economics and Natural Sciences. Marguerite also attended the Merrill-Palmer School in Detroit as a senior and grad student. In 1942, she married Robert William Miner and opened nursery schools for working mothers for the WPA. They moved to Jackson, MI, in 1944, where sons Robert W. Miner and Lawrence Harvey Miner were born. The 1947 polio epidemic claimed her husband, Robert. She taught many years for the Jackson Public Schools. She was active in Newcomer?s Club, First Presbyterian Church, AAUW, Jackson County Childhood, League of Women Voters, Jackson Education Association, and Alpha Delta Kappa, serving as president of several organizations. In 1951, Marguerite married Joseph Bernard Cimock and had a daughter, Sally Jo Cimock. The teacher shortage soon drafted her back into the classroom. Later, she earned a M.A. from Michigan State University. Her son Larry died in 1967 and her husband Joe died in 1975 of cancer. In 1979, Marguerite married Charles Lewis Hoffman and moved to Kalamazoo, MI. Activities in Kalamazoo have included Kalamazoo First Baptist Church, American Red Cross, Ladies? Library Association, Literacy Tutoring, Travel Club, Amnesty International, Christian Children?s Fund and Friendship Village Woods and activities. Surviving are her husband, Charles; daughter, Sally Maronde and husband Don; grandchildren Kyle Sanders, Kurt BoB Sanders, Justin Maronde, and Lara Johnson; also, son Dr. Robert W. Miner and wife Betty; grandchildren Aaron Miner and Andrea Watson. Nine great-grandchildren, called her GG. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Beryl Harvey Torbert; and brothers, Dr. Bernard Harvey and Lyle Harvey. A memorial service will be held at the Friendship Village ? Kiva Room, 1400 N. Drake Rd, Kalamazoo, on Saturday, December 16, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Dr. MaryBeth Sarhatt officiating. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to the Friendship Village Woods, American Red Cross, or First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo.
