CORINDO, Margaret E. "Betsy"
Kalamazoo, Michigan Margaret "Betsy" Corindo passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 15, 2009, at Friendship Village in Kalamazoo. Michigan was always home for Betsy. She was born in Kalamazoo in 1915 and grew up in Redford. Betsy completed her Bachelors degree in Kalamazoo, married and raised two daughters in South Haven. She then returned to Kalamazoo where she completed her Masters degree, taught in the Kalamazoo Public Schools and married Joseph Corindo. Betsy loved children. Neighborhood children frequently knocked on her door seeking her endless supply of homemade cookies. Nothing made her happier than hearing a child asking her to "tell me a story". She was a story teller at the library, a Sunday School teacher, and a school teacher in the Covert and Kalamazoo Public Schools. Betsy loved people. She enjoyed performing in groups, including play reading and chorus. She delighted in playing games and cards with family and friends. Most of all, she loved listening to people tell their stories. She took an active part in many organizations including the First United Methodist Church, Lydia Circle, Twentieth Century Club, Ladies Library, Encore Club, KARSP, Mature Citizens, Portage Seniors, and Eastwood Community Club. Above all, Betsy loved and was loved by her family. She was kind and generous, gifting each person of every generation with her homemade afghans and quilts. Betsy was preceded in death by: her husband, Joseph Corindo; her parents, Bethel and Sebastian Pell, and a sister, Virginia Asakura. Betsy is survived by two daughters, Julie Hover and Kathi Tom Capio; four grandchildren, Andy, Tom II, Julie and Jeffrey Capio; four great-grandchildren, Amber, Amanda, Rebecca and Jimmy; and three great-great-grandchildren, Isaac, Natalia and Mallory. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 21, 2009, at 3:30 pm in the Kiva of Friendship Village, 1400 N. Drake Rd. Private inurnment will be held later in Lakeview Cemetery of South Haven.
