VEENSCHOTEN, Madeline Ruth Medema
Of Kalamazoo, MI Age 91, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Friendship Village where she had been a resident for 13 years. Madeline was born on May 30, 1918 in rural Kalamazoo County. Madeline was a teacher until retirement in 1971. Her favorite pastimes were gardening, crocheting, knitting, sewing, reading and traveling. She was an active member in the Twin Lakes Reformed Church of Kalamazoo where she sang duets with her twin sister and served as a Sunday school teacher and in the Ladies Aid Society; MSU Women's Extension Service; First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, where she served as president of the United Presbyterian Women's Fellowship; and was active in the Sew and Sews. She was preceded in death by her parents Seibert and Elizabeth DeBoer Medema, by her first husband L. Thomas Lucas in 1967; and by her twin sister Pauline Lucas in 1998. She is survived by her second husband Dr. Girard Veenschoten; her children, Phillip and Voni Moerland Lucas, Robert and Linda Smit Lucas, Leona Lucas; and by grandchildren, Thomas and Melissa Lucas, Ronald and Katherine Lucas Morris, Ross and Kylie Bolt Lucas, Kenny and Sarah Lucas Soldatke, Corey Lucas, Adam Lucas; and great-grandchildren, Nichole Lucas, Zachary Blackman, Ashley Blackman, Sierra Lucas, Madison Lucas, and Caleb Lucas. Friends may meet the family from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM, Thursday, June 25, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 South Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan. A memorial service will be held at Twin Lakes Reformed Church, 5475 Ravine Road, Kalamazoo, Michigan at 2:00 Wednesday, July 1, 2009. There will be a private family committal service at Alamo Cemetery preceding the memorial service. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions to be made directly to the Twin Lakes Reformed Church.
