Lynn K. Morris

Lynn Campbell King Morris, died of heart failure June 20, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Archer Stuart Campbell and Evelyn Wester Williams, step-daughter of the late Hayward A. Williams and sister of the late A. Stuart Campbell. Lynn is survived and loved by her husband Gregory Morris, her son Paul King and his wife Desirae, their children Jasper, Felix and Malachai, her daughter Jennifer King and partner Gary Johnson. Born in Chicago, Lynn grew up in Florida and Connecticut, and graduated from Pembroke College (BA), Harvard University (MAT), and Stony Brook University (MA, PhD). Lynn taught in Hicksville, NY (intermediate and high school) and at Stony Brook University (rhetoric and science fiction), where she served as the Foreign Student Advisor, and Dean for Foreign Students before retiring.

Lynn gave her time and energy generously to work with students and scholars from 90 countries. Her wide travels helped her understand her students, empathize with them and advocate for them. When conventional systems could not meet their needs, Lynn improvised solutions or invited students to share her home.

Lynn completed her PhD research while serving as Foreign Student Adviser, then expanded her PhD dissertation to publish "Chaucer Source and Analogue Criticism," a computerized index of 200 years of Chaucerian scholarship. She read voraciously, in several languages. A Master Gardener, Lynn also enjoyed cats, travel, bridge, Scrabble, crochet, and Viking culture. She loved attending the Kalamazoo Symphony and appreciated fine art.

Lynn served others as an officer in the Stony Brook Graduate Student Organization, Three Village Garden Club (Stony Brook, NY) , Petal Pushers Garden Club (Kalamazoo), Kalamazoo Garden Council and Kalamazoo Area Newcomers Club. Lynn liked to study a wide range of subjects and share the information in a presentation or printed booklet. Her speeches and essays were noteworthy for their humor, and often finding a way to include a reference to koi, Beowolf or Asimov when you might least expect it. Her wisdom, smile, wit and love will be missed.
