CONKLIN, Lucille V.
of Kalamazoo, Michigan Born Aug. 18, 1921; died Dec. 28, 2008 surrounded by many of her children and grandchildren. Oldest of five children born to Ruth and Fred Surque of Cecil, Ohio. She graduated from Cement City High School in 1938 and later graduated from Mercy Hospital Nursing School in Jackson. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and was stationed in the Philippines. After serving her country, she returned to Jackson and worked for a doctor's office, where she met her future husband, Joseph, who was recovering from injuries he received in World War II. They were married June 10, 1948 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Irish Hills. They lived in Detroit while Joseph attended the University of Detroit Law School, and later settled in Tecumseh, MI. They were the parents of eight children, all of whom survive: Dan Lucianne Conklin of Kalamazoo, Joseph Deborah Conklin of Traverse City, Mary James Callow of Arlington, VA, Hugh Susan Conklin of Boyne City, Ann Conklin of Canton, Kathleen David Groendyk of Dayton, OH, Thomas Conklin of Maplewood, NJ, and Philip Philippa Kirby Conklin of Arlington, VA; grandchildren, Katie, Daniel, Lucy, Heather, Matthew, Evan, Philip, Andrea, Laura, Grace, Zachary, Michael, Ryan, Sarah, Abby, and Henry; sisters Helen and Pat. She was preceded in death by her parents; Joseph, her husband of 54 years; her grandson Justin; and her brothers Robert and Ivan Bud. She loved her family, gardening, bridge, and being a loving and caring mother and grandmother. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 11:00 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1150 W. Centre Ave., Fr. Michael Howell, officiating. Private family interment with military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. Friends may meet the family, Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 6-8:00 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Ave., where a rosary will be recited at 7:30PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lucille's memory may be made to the University of Detroit, Mercy School of Law, Mobile Law Clinic. Condolences may be left and viewed at
