Passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2016, twelve days before her 87th birthday.
Lois was born in Kalamazoo on May 24, 1929, the daughter of the late Steve and Dorothy (Ouding) Slater. She was owner/operator at DeYoung beauty salon and later in Real Estate. Her favorite job was demonstrating food for Gordons and Sam's Club.
Lois was a charter member of Haven Reformed Church. Lois and Herm moved to Texas 15 years ago where they spent the remainder of their life.
Lois found her greatest joy raising her 5 children, Carolyn (Steve) Santinga of Rockwall, TX, Joyce (Don) Zudweg of Plainwell, MI, Nick (Mary) DeYoung of Weaverville, NC, Diane (Jim) Hendriksen of Rowlett, TX and Kim (Lance) Arianna of Rowlett, TX. God continued to enrich her life with her 28 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.
Lois was preceded in death by her loving husband Herm (Nick). She is survived by two sisters Betty (Jerry) Meijer and Dorothy (Dallas) Yowler and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th St., Kalamazoo, MI 49009. The funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Haven Church, 5350 North Sprinkle Road, Kalamazoo, MI 49004. Her grandson, Rev. Nick DeYoung will officiate. Interment will take place later in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Devoted Barn, a non-profit in Newport, MI (owned by her granddaughter Melissa) and Haven Reformed Church, Kalamazoo MI.
