Linda went home to be with her eternal Lord and Savior Friday, January 27, 2023, in the comfort of her home with her son, and primary caregiver, holding her hand with deep affection in her final moments of life on earth. Born August 4, 1932 in Kalamazoo, she was the daughter of Turner and Elsie (Flagg) Howard.
Long-time member of Calvary Bible Church, Linda was a Godly woman whose faith and commitment to Jesus Christ was reflected in her daily walk. She was affectionately known and appreciated as a sweet, kind, very likeable, funny person who lived a life of humility and grace. A veritable ‘angel’ in the minds of many and a blessing to all who met her, Linda had an indomitable spirt, a warm smile and a gracious, enduring personality. She believed that a happy life consists in tranquility of mind.
A graduate of Western State High School, Bronson School of Nursing (RN) and the University of Washington (BSN), Linda was committed to educational endeavors and experiences that manifest a life of service and caring for others. Linda also attended Hillsdale College where she focused on Christian studies. In high school, Linda was involved in the Writing Club, co-wrote a Christmas play, and was involved in band, the Glee Club and the Girls Athletic Association (which existed before Title IX when girls weren’t allowed to compete in varsity sports).
Linda worked as an instructor at Bronson Hospital for many years teaching obstetrics; at Broward General Hospital in Ft Lauderdale, FL; the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, MN; the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle, WA; for two private medical practices; on an Indian Reservation; and at the Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital.
Linda was an avid reader and writer, liked gardening, traveling, baking, singing, taking walks, beautiful sunsets, the Lake Michigan shoreline and spending time with family and friends. She was affectionately known to have an abiding love for babies, fluffy clouds, butterflies and the beauty and vibrant colors of nature.
Linda is survived by her children Tamara Leonard-Boonstra; Jeffrey Leonard; grandchildren, Zachary (Nicole) Garton, Kaitlyn (Nathan) Meyer-Niedzwiezki, Chelsie (Brandon) Helderop; Great granddaughter, Harper Helderop; and Great grandson, Brooks Helderop. Linda played a very big part in her grandkids lives and left them with many memories to treasure. She is also survived by two sisters, Beverly (and the late John) Pike and Ruth (Arthur) Randall; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Quentin Howard and Ted Howard, sister Marcia Howard and cat ‘Princess’.
Friends may meet the family from 10:00-11:00am Friday, February 17th at Calvary Bible Church, 855 N. Drake Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49009 where funeral services will follow at 11:00am.
