of Portage, Michigan Passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the age of 91. He was born in Chicago, IL on June 28, 1921, the son of the late Lester R. and Mabel A. Coddling Shires. He served with the United States Army during World War II. He was employed as a building engineer for J.L. Hudson, retiring after 20 years of service. Lester enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He was a handyman extraordinaire, who loved to fix things. He was married to Betty Inman Shires in 1947; she preceded him in death in 1994. He is survived by his children, Don Barbara Shires of Santa Fe, N.M., Jill Robert Baxter Shires of Kalamazoo, and Jeff Shires of Rockville, MD; one grandchild, John Shires of Broomfield, CO; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Baitzer and his sister, Jeannette Bartz. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St., where a memorial service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Scott Burdick will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
