MILLS, Leonard D.
of Portage Passed away on October 17, 2007 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. He was born August 26, 1916 in Carsonville, MI, son of the late Rev. H.T. and Anne Walker Mills. He was united in marriage to Veta Holcomb on June 14, 1940. Leonard received his Bachelors Degree from Central Michigan University and then his Masters Degree from the University of Michigan. In 1994 he received an honorary doctorate in business management from Indiana Wesleyan University. He was a member of and speaker for Gideon?s International. He was also a member of the Lighthouse Community Church. He served in several leadership roles in the Wesleyan denomination. He was elected to the Board of Trustees at Indiana Wesleyan University and served as chairman for 24 years. Upon retiring from the board, he was named Chairman Emeritus. Leonard was an assistant superintendent for the Portage Public School System for 21 years until retiring in 1986. Surviving Leonard are his wife, Veta; children, Ann Art O?Dell of Springfield, VA, Nancy Chitwood of Grand Rapids, Jim Diane Mills of Portage, Janet Roger Mills of Kalamazoo, Tim Sharon Mills of Holland; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were; sister, Iva Francis; and son-in-law, Byron Chitwood. Visitation will be Sunday, October 21st, from 4 ? 8:00PM, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo and one hour prior to service time on Monday, at the church, from 12-1:00PM. The Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 22nd, 1:00PM at the Lighthouse Community Church, 4321 S. 11th Street, Kalamazoo, Rev. Danny Janes, officiating. Entombment at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery will follow.
