BROWN, Leighton C. Jr.
Of Kalamazoo Residence. He was born February 15, 1919 in Kalamazoo, one of three children to Leighton Sr. and Kathryn Sherman Brown. A 1937 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, Leighton attended Western Michigan College of Education for 3½ years. Leighton was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in Tunisia, Naples, and Rome, and earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was employed by Kalamazoo Saving and Loan since 1957 and became Assistant Treasurer in 1959. Later Leighton became Vice President, and in 1981 became Vice President of the association's parent company, First Federal Savings of Detroit. He also served as President of the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek chapter of the American Saving and Loan Institute; President of the Indiana-Michigan Chapter of the Financial Managers Society; and was a member of the Kalamazoo County Chamber of Commerce. Leighton also Mr. Brown passed away Saturday afternoon, February 7, 2009 at Rose Arbor Hospice volunteered for many years at Loaves and Fishes, where he served as bookkeeper. He was a 61 year member of Kalamazoo Elks Lodge #50 and in his spare time, he enjoyed bowling and golfing. On May 28, 1941, he was united in marriage to Martha E. Shears. Preceding him in death were his wife, Martha Brown on January 16, 1994; his parents, and 1 brother, Robert Brown. Surviving are 2 children, Michael Brown of Kalamazoo, and Amy Jo William II Rac of Mansfield, OH; 1 sister, Barbara Riegel of Kalamazoo; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Leighton will be at 11:30 AM on Wednesday at Westwood United Methodist Church, 538 Nichols Road, with Rev. Dr. Wayne A. Price officiating. Private interment will be Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Loaves and Fishes or Westwood United Methodist Church.
