HUBBARD, Lawrence E.
Portage Born September 1, 1923 in Grand Rapids to the late Ralph and Louisa Hubbard. He was a resident of Kalamazoo most of his life. He was a graduate of Central High School and attended the American Technical Society of Chicago Business Administration. He was a member of Central High School Concert and Marching bands and of the Boy Scouts of America for 19 years and served as Scoutmaster of 4 different troops. He was also a member of the John Phillip Sousa marching band of the Sea Scouts as drummer. He was a Michigan State trooper before discharged to serve in The Unites States Army Air Corps in World War II Military Police Air Transport Command. He married Betty Jane Brooks on July 24, 1943. She preceded him in death in 2005. He worked for Beach Products, 37 ½ years as printer. His interests were in wild life, Indian lore, liked good music, travel, exploring the wild places, walking, cycling, photography, birds and trains. He also worked for the Edison Neighborhood "Crime Prevention Task Force" and organized "The Watch Team" and the "Kalamazoo County Surveillance Team" that worked with Kalamazoo Public Safety and Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team. He was the Kalamazoo County Citizen of the year in 1992 and honored by The Black Police Officers Association. Lawrence is survived by his daughter Jean Ann Bobby Hubbard of Killeen, TX; three great grandchildren, Michael Adrian, Tiffany Marie, Elizabeth Ann Marie; and several nieces and two nephews. He was also preceded in death by his son, James Allen Hubbard; two grandchildren Brian Lynn, Michael Lee; three brothers, Ralph, William, Harvey; and two sisters, Doris May and Lillian Louise. A funeral service will be held Monday, 2:00 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., where friends will be greeted from 1-2pm.
