In loving memory of Larry G. Johnson, age 85, who died peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones, on January 26, 2025. He was born on September 23, 1939, in Kalamazoo, the son of Frank and Marian (Herron) Johnson.
Larry was one of the greatest sports achievers in Kalamazoo area prep history. He was a graduate of Kalamazoo University High School, where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball, track, and baseball. While attending Western Michigan University, he was called up to play with the Chicago White Sox. He returned to Kalamazoo and began his job at General Motors, where he worked for 26 years. After his retirement, he became a delivery driver for RX Optical.
Larry enjoyed bowling in a league at Continental Lanes, playing slow pitch softball, camping, and grilling out. His greatest achievement in life was his family. On December 29, 1965, he married the love of his life, Joan Cobb, who he met on the campus of WMU. They raised their three children. He was a supportive and present father, with a great sense of humor. Larry always attended his three children’s sporting events, and even coached his sons in Little League. He was an animal lover, and especially adored his dog, Lucy.
Larry is survived by his wife, Joan Johnson; his daughter, Laura, his son, Jeff, and his son, Mike; his grandchildren: Ryan, Katherine, Anna, Jason, Lauren, Drake, and Alexis; his brother, Garry Johnson; nephews, and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents.
