PIOCH, Kenneth A.
Kalamazoo Ken died on Friday, October 1, 2010, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born October 3, 1925, in South Haven, MI, a son of Herman and Serena Pioch. He graduated from South Haven High School in 1943 and Michigan State College in 1951, majoring in lumber merchandising. He served in the US Army for two and a half years in 1944, 1945 and 1946 in the European Theater, where he earned several medals and awards. Ken was employed in the retail lumber business for 35 years, retiring in 1986 after 25 years as manager of Wickes Lumber in Portage. On September 6, 1958 he and Ila Newton were married in Northville. He was a member of several genealogical societies and had traced his ancestors back to 1480. Ken planted thousands of trees and had 35 varieties on his property. He liked using his chain saw and splitting firewood, gardening, making wine, downhill skiing for many years and cross country skiing in his later years. As a blood donor, Ken was a member of the American Red Cross Ten Gallon Club. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving as an usher and helping with yard maintenance there for many years. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard of Indianapolis, in 2001 and by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Ila; daughters, Kristine Pioch of Kalamazoo and Janet Robert Zdzinicki of Holland; grandchildren, Sarah Mosher, Jared and Evan Zdzinicki; sisters-in-law, Ruth Pioch, Alice Newton and Cece Grabowski; brothers-in-law, Cleon Newton, Walter Newton and Elvin Newton; and 15 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 2122 Bronson Blvd., at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, with Pastor Timothy Seeber, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Hill Cemetery in Oshtemo Township. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street and an hour before the funeral service at the church.
