WALTERS, Kathryn Mary
Kalamazoo Left this life April 13, 2013 surrounded by the loving comfort of family. She was born March 26, 1925 in Currie, MN to Theodore and Elizabeth Paal. She was the youngest of four children, Raymond Paal deceased, Lorraine Ives deceased and a surviving sister, Lavahn Mertensotto. She married Roy Walters on August 5, 1948, they had 8 children, seven whom survive, Jeffrey preceded her in death , MikeLindaWalters, PatKandiWalters, SteveMaureenWalters, GretchenMark Wilson, Cathy Coley Dennis Constable, fiancée, Tim Walters, SuePaul Arrick, daughter-in-law, Sunny Walters; grandchildren, MikeMeganWalters, SteveKristin Walters, Matt Walters, DamonAlyson Grant, DarcyJamie Dring, Colin Walters, Bryn Walters, Trevor Wilson, Sutton Wilson, JonathanAnna Coley, Jason Coley, ChristineScott Zehner, Leah Steven Gerrould, Katie Walters, Kyle Arrick and Morgan Arrick; 4 nieces and 1 nephew. Her vibrant and loving life included 12 great-grandchildren. Kathryn was an adventurous soul, from the time she sold her 3rd grade Catechism book, for a plane ride in a barn storming bi-plane to recent balloon rides, horse rides and kayak trips. She was always willing to try new things. Even though chocolate was her favorite food, she recently ate some broccoli. Kathryn's never ending sense of humor was a joy to everyone. After graduating from St. Catherine's College at 19 years of age, she began teaching elementary school in MN. It was there that she met and married Roy Walters. They moved to Kalamazoo in 1951, when Roy accepted a teaching and coaching position at State High. After raising 7 children, Kathryn re-entered the teaching profession at the John F. Kennedy Center, aiding special needs children. Upon retirement, they split their time between Augusta, MI and the family lake home on Gun Lake. She was a recent resident of the New Friends Community. Kathryn created many wonderful memories for her family and anyone who was lucky enough to have known her. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the Langeland Family Funeral Home, 3926 S. 9th Street, from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM, with a rosary service to be held at 7:30 PM. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 10:00 AM at SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 159 131st Avenue, Wayland, MI., with Rev. Fr. Christian Johnston, Celebrant. Memorial Remembrances may be made to the Cheff Center in Augusta, MI. Interment will follow in Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
