Kalamazoo Kathryn Joyce Richards Pieratt Shields Kellogg passed away Thursday, April 22, 2010, following a battle with Multiple Sclerosis for over 30 years. She was born October 6, 1944 in Kalamazoo, the only daughter of Paul A. and Joyce V. Gibson Richards and was a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area. Kathryn was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo, where she had volunteered for many years. She had also worked for Trinity Lutheran Church, W-L Molding, Sonitrol Security and the Boy Scouts of America. She had served as a Troop Leader for the Girl Scouts, a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, loved bowling at Airway Lanes, crocheting and knitting. Kathryn crocheted and knitted items for her children and made many, many baby blankets for family, friends and also those who took care of her. She loved her grandchildren, especially Cassie, Vivian and J.J. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lawrence Richards; and two husbands, Michael Pieratt and Robert Bennett Shields, Jr. Kathryn is survived by her children, Kimberly Kay Shields Wolford of FL, Anna Joyce Karen Shields of Kalamazoo, Robert Paul Shields of NC, Felicia Marie Bruce Hotchkiss of MI; 7 grandchildren, Cassandra Shields, Robert Wolford, J.J. Lord, Vivian Kathryn Watson, Daisy Shields, Robert John Shields, Lilly Shields and Robert Paul Shields, Jr.; 4 brothers, Norman Sally Richards of Allegan, Paul Richards of Portage, Bill Ardith Richards of Albion and Thomas Denise Richards of Portage; several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM in the First Baptist Church, 315 W. Michigan, with Rev. Dr. MaryBeth Sarhatt, officiating.
